The Algarve's Michelin restaurants, and which one suits your evening
The Algarve carries more Michelin recognition than most visitors realise, spread from Tavira to Lagos. The useful question is not which is best, but which suits the evening you are planning.
Local expert · Algarve Circle

The Algarve is known abroad for beaches and golf, and it quietly holds a concentration of Michelin recognition that would be the headline anywhere else in Europe.
Ranking them against each other is not very useful, because they are not competing for the same evening. This is a guide to which room fits which night.
The two-star rooms
Ocean at Vila Vita Parc in Porches has held two Michelin stars under chef Hans Neuner since 2007. The resort around it is a Leading Hotels of the World property with 22 hectares of gardens, so dinner here is realistically an evening rather than a meal.
Vila Joya in Gale, Albufeira, is the other two-star, with chef Dieter Koschina in place since 1991. Thirty-four years in one kitchen is close to unheard of at this level, and it shows in how settled the cooking is.
Both need booking well in advance and both reward staying the night rather than driving home.
The one-star rooms, by where you are
Vista sits in the Bela Vista Hotel at Praia da Rocha, a 1918 clifftop manor and a Relais & Châteaux property, with chef Joao Oliveira. Alameda is in Faro, blending traditional and contemporary Algarve technique, open Thursday to Monday for dinner. Bon Bon sits between Carvoeiro and Lagoa, where chef Jose Lopes cooks a contemporary take on Algarvian tradition.
GUSTO by Heinz Beck at the Conrad Algarve in Almancil is the Mediterranean tasting-menu option, from a three-star chef. A Ver Tavira is the eastern one, beside Tavira castle, with sommelier Claudia Abrantes working alongside chef Luis Brito.
The practical point: these are spread right across the region, so the honest filter is which one you can reach without an hour each way.
The one that is deliberately small
CHECKin by Leonel Pereira in Faro serves dinner in a 26-seat dining room. If you want a Michelin-starred chef's cooking without a large room around it, this is the one.
When you want the cooking, not the occasion
Avenida inside the Lagos Avenida Hotel holds a Bib Gourmand, which is Michelin's marker for good cooking at a fair price, and it looks over the marina.
Restaurante F is Michelin Guide recommended, on a glass terrace above Praia da Rocha. NUMA in Portimão is chef Nuno Martins cooking author-driven food from regional Portuguese produce. CaféZique in Loulé's historic centre is a fine-dining room and enoteca recommended by both the Michelin and Repsol guides for 2026. 2 Passos sits on Praia da Ancao inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park and has been trading over thirty years.
In Tavira, A Mesa and Mesa Farta both carry Guide recognition within a few streets of each other, which is remarkable for a town of that size.
The ones with history
Henrique Leis near Quinta do Lago opened in 1993 and held a Michelin star for nineteen years, from 2000 to 2019. Willie's in Vilamoura is run by chef Willie Wurger, who earned the Algarve's first Michelin star and then held his own from 2006 to 2019.
Neither currently holds a star, and both are still the reason a certain generation of visitor comes back to the Algarve. Judge them on the cooking rather than the guidebook.
How to plan a week around it
One two-star as the event, one one-star near wherever you are staying, and the Bib Gourmand or a Guide room for the nights in between. Booking the two-star rooms is the part people leave too late.
If you are staying east, Tavira gives you a star and two Guide kitchens inside one small town. If you are staying central, Almancil and Quinta do Lago put more of this within twenty minutes than anywhere else in Portugal outside Lisbon.
