Hiking in the Algarve.
Clifftop paths above sea caves, a wild Atlantic coast trail, a coast-to-coast route through the quiet interior and flat lagoon boardwalks in the east. Here are the walks this region is famous for, and the towns and guides around them, from people who walk here all year.
The trails everyone asks about
Four very different walks, from half-day cliff paths to a route across the whole region. Each one links to the towns you would base yourself in.
Seven Hanging Valleys
Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos
The Algarve’s most famous clifftop walk, running along the golden limestone coast between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes near Carvoeiro. The path threads a series of collapsed valleys above sea caves and hidden coves, passes above the Benagil cave and the Alfanzina lighthouse, and drops to beaches along the way. Most people walk it as an out-and-back over a half day, and it is regularly named among the best coastal walks in Europe.
Rota Vicentina: the Fishermen’s Trail
Trilho dos Pescadores
A wild, single-file path along the west coast, following the routes local fishermen used to reach their marks. It hugs the clifftops of the Costa Vicentina through the protected Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina natural park, with the Atlantic below the whole way. The Algarve stages link Odeceixe, Aljezur, Carrapateira, Vila do Bispo and Sagres, walked village to village with sandy stretches that make the going slower than the map suggests.
Via Algarviana
GR13, coast to coast the quiet way
The long-distance route across the inland Algarve, from Alcoutim on the Guadiana river all the way to Cabo de São Vicente at the region’s southwestern tip. It is walked in stages through cork oak, citrus and cistus country, over the Serra do Caldeirão and the Serra de Monchique near Fóia, the Algarve’s highest point, and through whitewashed villages where you may be the only walker that day. This is the Algarve most visitors never see.
Ria Formosa boardwalks
Flat, easy walking in the lagoon park
The gentle counterpart to the cliff paths: boardwalk and levada-flat trails through the Ria Formosa natural park, a lagoon of barrier islands, salt pans and tidal channels stretching along the eastern Algarve. Expect flamingos and wading birds in season, fishing boats, shellfish beds and long views over the water. The trails around Faro, Olhão, Quinta do Lago and Tavira suit every age and every fitness level, all year round.
Beaches on the trails
The coastal paths drop to some of the Algarve's best beaches. These are the ones the famous walks actually pass.

Walking trails in the Algarve, all year round
Most people picture the Algarve as a summer beach region, but walkers know it as one of Europe's best cool-season destinations. From October to May the light is soft, the hillsides turn green, the coastal paths are quiet and the temperatures are made for walking. The variety is the surprise: golden limestone cliffs and sea caves on the south coast, raw Atlantic scenery on the west, cork oak hills and whitewashed villages inland, and a flat, bird-rich lagoon in the east. Four very different Algarves, all within an hour or so of each other.
The named routes carry you through all of it. The Seven Hanging Valleys is the postcard half-day, the Fishermen's Trail of the Rota Vicentina is the wild multi-day walk along the west coast, the Via Algarviana crosses the whole region from the Guadiana at Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente, and the Ria Formosa boardwalks give easy, level walking whenever you want a gentler day. We bring the trails, the beaches they pass, the towns to stay in and the local guides together in one place, with honest reviews from the people who live here, so you can plan the walking trip and everything around it.
Questions people actually ask
What is the best hike in the Algarve?
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) is the one most people mean: a clifftop path between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes near Carvoeiro, passing above the Benagil cave, sea arches and hidden coves. It is regularly named among the best coastal walks in Europe. For wilder scenery, the Fishermen’s Trail on the west coast is its equal, and the inland Via Algarviana is the pick for long-distance walkers.
When is the best time of year to hike in the Algarve?
Autumn through spring. From October to May the temperatures are ideal for walking, the countryside is green and the trails are quiet, with spring adding wildflowers along the cliffs. July and August are hot, and the coastal paths have almost no shade, so in summer we would walk early in the morning or stick to the flat, breezier Ria Formosa boardwalks.
How do you walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail?
The trail runs between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, both near Carvoeiro in the Lagoa area, and you can start from either end. Most people park at one beach, walk out and back, and break at the beaches and viewpoints along the way. Wear proper shoes, carry water and keep well back from the cliff edges, which are undercut in places. Praia da Marinha fills up in summer, so an early start pays off twice.
What is the difference between the Fishermen’s Trail and the Historical Way?
Both belong to the Rota Vicentina network on the west coast. The Fishermen’s Trail is the coastal route: single-file clifftop paths and sandy stretches right above the Atlantic, tougher underfoot but with the famous scenery. The Historical Way runs roughly parallel inland, on wider rural tracks through cork oak country and villages, easier walking and better suited to cyclists. Many walkers mix the two, coast one day and country the next.
Do I need a guide to hike in the Algarve?
No. The named routes, the Seven Hanging Valleys, the Rota Vicentina and the Via Algarviana, are waymarked and well walked, and the Ria Formosa boardwalks need no navigation at all. A local guide still earns their keep on longer traverses, for luggage transfers between stages, and for the birdlife, botany and stories you would otherwise walk straight past. You will find local walking and outdoor operators listed on this page.
Are there easy, flat walks in the Algarve?
Yes. The Ria Formosa natural park in the eastern Algarve is laced with flat boardwalk trails around Faro, Olhão, Quinta do Lago and Tavira, with lagoon views, salt pans and flamingos in season. Town promenades such as the clifftop boardwalk at Carvoeiro also give big coastal scenery for very little effort. Both work well for families, older walkers and anyone easing in.
