A rainy day in the Algarve with kids
The Algarve sells itself on sunshine, so nobody plans for the wet week. These are the places that work when the beach is off, sorted by age and by how long they hold attention.
Local expert · Algarve Circle

Nobody books the Algarve for the indoors, which is exactly why a wet day catches families out. The good news is that there is more here than the reputation suggests, and most of it is genuinely built for children rather than tolerating them.
We have sorted this by what actually matters on the day: how old they are, and how many hours you need to fill.
Under sevens: somewhere to run
Adventure HQ in Alcantarilha is the Algarve's largest indoor playground, and the layout does the thing every parent wants, which is letting children climb and slide while the adults sit with food and drink in sight of them.
Tigre Feliz in Quarteira is the same idea at 600 square metres, with soft play, themed zones, an interactive gaming zone and two themed birthday rooms. If you are between Vilamoura and Quarteira, it is the closer answer.
Both are a comfortable two to three hours, longer if you eat there.
Seven and up: something with a goal
Children who have outgrown soft play want a task, and the Algarve is unusually well supplied with escape rooms.
Mission Masters in Albufeira runs two themed rooms, Museum Heist and Survival Instinct. Escape Carvoeiro has two rooms in English and Portuguese, Bank Heist and Seven Seas, five minutes from Carvoeiro beach, from 16.50 euros per person. Escape One Algarve in Praia da Rocha runs 60 and 90-minute games and has kids' versions from age ten.
Book the slot before you drive over. These rooms run one group at a time, so turning up on a wet afternoon with everyone else's idea is how you end up back in the car.
When they need to burn it off
Quantum Park near Silves has a three-storey laser tag arena, minimum age seven, at 15 euros per person for two games, with trampolines on the same site. Mothership Laser Tag in Parchal is the space-themed version, hidden under The Warehouse and open Thursday to Sunday.
Karting Almancil Family Park has been going since 1992 and has junior and baby tracks alongside the main one, plus ATV off-roading, mini boats and a petting zoo, so it works across a wide age range in one stop.
The full day out
Aquashow Park in Quarteira is the one that solves a whole rainy day, because the water park has an indoor section and there is a four-star hotel on the same site. It is the difference between filling an afternoon and not having to think about the day at all.
If they would rather make something
The Space Lagos runs creative workshops, kids' craft parties and community book clubs, along with paint-and-wine evenings for the adults. It is the calmest option here, and the only one where they go home with something they made.
Oficina Alegria in Loulé is a dedicated indoor party space for birthdays and celebrations, with decor, cakes and catering handled, if the rainy day happens to be someone's birthday.
What we would actually do
With one wet day and mixed ages, we would do an escape room in the morning while everyone is fresh and patient, lunch somewhere unhurried, then an indoor playground in the afternoon when nobody has any patience left. With a wet week, spread them out and keep Aquashow for the worst day.
Everything above is open year round unless noted, which is the part people get wrong about the Algarve in winter.
