Olhão
The Algarve's largest fishing port, famous for its red-brick market halls and seafood restaurants. A gateway to the Ria Formosa islands of Armona and Culatra.
Glorious
Towel weather, no excuses.
Praia do Farol, right now
Praia do Farol lies at the western tip of Culatra island, beneath the Cabo de Santa Maria lighthouse that gives the hamlet its name. The lighthouse, in service since 1851, towers over a cluster of low houses and sandy lanes where no cars run, and ferries arrive from both Olhão and Faro. On the ocean side the beach is broad and white, growing enormous as the tide drops, while the lagoon side stays calm for paddling. It is the most visited corner of Culatra without ever feeling like a resort. It suits day-trippers, families, and anyone who wants an island beach with a landmark to walk to.
