Olhão
The Algarve's largest fishing port, famous for its red-brick market halls and seafood restaurants. A gateway to the Ria Formosa islands of Armona and Culatra.

Praia da Culatra, right now
Praia da Culatra is the ocean beach of Culatra island, home to a working fishing community and reached by ferry from Olhão. The ferry lands at the village on the lagoon side, a place of sandy lanes and fishermen's houses where there are no cars at all, and walkways lead across the island to the Atlantic beach on the far side. The sand there is wide, flat and rarely busy once you are past the end of the walkway, with the Ria Formosa's channels and shellfish beds behind you. It suits families who enjoy the island rhythm, walkers, and anyone curious about a community that still lives from the sea.
