Silves Castle

The best-preserved castle in the Algarve: a ring of red sandstone walls and towers above the rooftops of Silves, the city that was once Xelb, Moorish capital of the region. Inside are gardens, ramparts you can walk in a full circuit, and the great vaulted cistern that kept the medieval city in water. The Gothic cathedral and the old town's cobbled streets sit just below the gate.
