The Algarve's most famous sea cave: a vast dome carved by the ocean out of the golden cliffs east of Carvoeiro, with a round opening in its roof that lets the sun pour onto a hidden beach inside. It sits just along the coast from Benagil beach, in the Lagoa municipality, and can only be reached from the water. Licensed boat, kayak and paddleboard trips run from Benagil, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and Portimão for most of the year, sea state allowing.

Getting thereFrom the sea only. Boats pause inside the cave mouth; only kayaks and paddleboards may land on the inner beach, and only when the sea is calm. Access is regulated by the maritime authority, so go with a licensed operator rather than trying to swim out.
