Praia de Dona Ana, right now
Praia de Dona Ana is Lagos's most photographed beach, a cove of golden sand framed by ochre cliffs and sea stacks just south of the town centre. The sandstone pillars rising from clear, usually calm water have become one of the defining images of the Algarve. Access is by a long staircase down the cliff face, and since a major sand replenishment in 2015 the beach has been far larger, joining stretches that high tide once cut off from one another. The rocks at either end reward snorkellers in settled weather, and the clifftop path connects towards Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade. It suits families, snorkellers and photographers, with the caveat that the stairs rule out step-free access.
