Praia da Batata, right now
Praia da Batata is the town beach of Lagos, a small sandy cove beside the Ponta da Bandeira fort, a minute or two from the old city walls. It is the first sand you reach walking out of the historic centre, across from the seventeenth-century fort that guards the mouth of the Bensafrim channel. The water inside the bay is usually calm, and at lower tides you can pass through tunnels cut in the rock to the small neighbouring coves, including Praia dos Estudantes. Being so close to town it fills quickly in summer, but the convenience is precisely the point. It suits families with young children and anyone staying in Lagos who wants sea and sand without a car or a walk.
