The west, from Sagres up the Costa Vicentina, takes the full Atlantic and holds some of Europe’s most consistent beginner-to-advanced beach breaks. The south is gentler, with soft waves in winter and calm summer water that suits stand-up paddle perfectly, including SUP tours into the Ponta da Piedade grottos at Lagos.
Schools here run daily group lessons, private coaching, multi-day courses and full surf-camp weeks, with boards, wetsuits and insurance included. Winter is high season on the west coast; summer belongs to the south and to SUP.

Before you book
Where should a complete beginner learn to surf in the Algarve?
Sagres, Aljezur’s beaches (Arrifana, Amoreira) and Lagos are the classic choices. Schools pick the beach each morning based on the swell, so you learn on whatever wave is friendliest that day.
Do I need my own board and wetsuit?
No. Every school here includes board and wetsuit in the lesson price, and most rent equipment to independent surfers too. Just bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.
