SOS Algarve Animals

SOS Algarve Animals is the trading name of Animal Aid, Associação Protetora dos Animais (NIPC 510205372), a registered Portuguese non-profit dedicated to the sterilisation of street cats and dogs, and of pets belonging to families who could not otherwise afford the operation, across the Algarve. It is also known as Sterilise Our Strays, and relies entirely on donations to continue its work. Its programmes include catch, spay and release schemes, mostly for female cats and dogs, along with financial help and guidance for owners on low incomes, and education around responsible pet ownership. The charity publishes its yearly results on its own site: in 2025 it sterilised 1,834 cats (of which 289 were pregnant), preventing 1,284 kittens being born, and 257 dogs (7 pregnant), preventing 50 puppies being born into a life on the street or in a shelter. It spent EUR 84,485 on veterinary care and sterilisation and EUR 103,158 in total in 2025. SOS Algarve Animals does not run its own shelter. Supporters can donate through the website, request help paying for a sterilisation by email, or follow its ongoing work and colony projects around the region on Facebook and Instagram.
