Colegio Bernardette Romeira

Colegio Bernardette Romeira is a private school in Olhao, about 10km from Faro, teaching the Portuguese Ministry of Education curriculum alongside a Cambridge International programme, as a Cambridge Learning Partner, for English Studies. The school takes students aged 3 to 16, from pre-school through to the end of Portuguese ensino basico, in a purpose-built campus that holds Operating Permit No. 11/DREAlg, issued 23 July 2004. The school carries the name of its founder, Bernardette de Jesus Romeira, a teacher from Olhao who began her career in 1949 at Externato Dr. Joao Lucio alongside her husband, conductor Jose Belchior Viegas. Her subsequent posts included Externato de Sao Bras de Alportel from 1957, Colegio de Algarve in Faro during the 1970s, and the International School of Vilamoura in the 1980s. In September 2001, at the age of 83, she founded Colegio Bernardette Romeira to continue that work under her own school. As a Cambridge Learning Partner, the school teaches its English Studies programme and the English-language elements of Portuguese Studies according to Cambridge Curriculum methodology, run alongside the standard Portuguese Ministry of Education programme rather than replacing it.
