The Benagil cave and the dolphin grounds off the south coast are the Algarve's two great boat trips, and the smartest way to choose between operators is by where the boat leaves from: Lagos, Portimão, Carvoeiro beach itself, Vilamoura or Faro. Leaving from closer means more time at the caves and less motoring. Every operator on this list is a licensed maritime tourism company, and several carry marine biologists rather than general guides. A note on the famous cave: boats enter or approach depending on swell and current rules, so if standing on the Benagil sand matters to you, ask the operator directly what their trip does before you book.
