Porches
Porches is a village in the municipality of Lagoa, strung along the old EN125 between Lagoa and Armação de Pêra, and it is the Algarve's pottery town. Hand-painted ceramics have been made here for generations, and the tradition was revived in the 1960s; today workshops and showrooms along the road sell everything from azulejo panels to the painted swallows that end up in suitcases across Europe, and watching the painters at work explains the prices. The village itself is small and whitewashed, with a parish church and quiet lanes, but its parish also holds a serious stretch of coast. Praia da Senhora da Rocha sits below a headland crowned by a small white chapel that has watched the sea for centuries, with fishing boats and a cove beach on either side; Praia Nova and Cova Redonda hide below the cliffs nearby, and a tunnel cut through the headland links the coves on foot. Porches suits people who like their beach days with something to show for them afterwards: a morning in the coves, an afternoon among the kilns and paintbrushes, and a piece of the Algarve to take home.
