The Orquestra do Algarve, conducted by Martim Sousa Tavares, brings a programme built around water and rivers to the Grande Auditorio of Teatro das Figuras. The evening opens with the Portuguese premiere of Become River by John Luther Adams, a piece that grows from a single descending melodic line into a network of orchestral tributaries, and continues with Philip Glass's evocation of nine great rivers of the Amazon basin. It is a rare chance to hear the Algarve's own symphonic orchestra tackle large-scale contemporary orchestral repertoire in its home venue, in a concert that runs about 90 minutes with an interval.
