Monte Gordo honours Nossa Senhora das Dores on the second weekend of September with festivities centred on the seafront next to the Casino, where a small funfair and food stalls set up alongside the nightly concerts. The high point is the procession along Praia de Monte Gordo, when the image of the Virgin is carried across the sand as local fishing boats sound their horns and launch flares to mark its passage. The weekend closes with a fireworks display over the beach. The whole programme is free and open to everyone.
