Now in its 27th year, the Corrida da Baía de Monte Gordo is one of the Algarve's longest running beach races. It starts on Praia da Manta Rota at 10:30 on 30 August and follows the sand east through Altura, where there is a halfway checkpoint, before finishing on Praia de Monte Gordo, roughly 8km further on. It is run entirely on sand rather than road, so times are slower than a typical 8km, but the setting more than makes up for it, with the whole route hugging the eastern Algarve coastline. Feed stations are set up along the way and every finisher gets a medal and technical shirt. Organised by Grupo Desportivo Pic-Nic with the municipalities of Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim, entry is cheaper if booked before the end of July.
