Sul Informação

Sul Informação is a Portuguese-language, online-only newspaper covering the Algarve, with a sister title, Alentejo.Sul Informação, for the neighbouring region. It was launched on 26 September 2011 by three journalists, Hugo Rodrigues, Nuno Costa and Elisabete Rodrigues, who had previously worked together at a regional print newspaper and left after months of unpaid wages and subsidies. The paper remains owned by its own staff, journalists and administrative and commercial team, together with a group of supporters, through a cultural association created for the purpose, Página em Branco. The paper built its reputation on original reporting across the region, sending journalists to Faro and Portimão as readily as Monchique, Alcoutim, Odemira or Mértola. For its 11th anniversary in 2022, it launched Revista DOIS, an annual printed magazine with interviews, long-form reporting and photography; the design of the first issue won a Prémio Lusófono de Criatividade. In 2021 it launched the first multi-function app produced by an Algarve newspaper, and on 12 February 2025 it relaunched its website with a new design and features built from scratch. In 2026 the paper began Geração SULi, a media-literacy collaboration with six Algarve secondary schools, funded through the Pluralistic Media for Democracy programme run by JournalismFund Europe. Students research, write and publish their own articles on an interactive platform, with Sul Informação journalists running in-person sessions in schools, including in Vila Real de Santo António and Portimão, and training students in fact-checking and journalistic ethics. Its Faro base is at the Ualg TecStart business incubator on the University of Algarve's Gambelas campus.
