Portugal Resident

Portugal Resident is an English-language weekly newspaper for the Algarve, first published on 8 November 1989 as the Algarve Resident. It started as an idea by Canadian couple Dan and Carole Heffernan, produced out of two adjoining apartments in Praia da Rocha. First editor Reg Reynolds handed the role to journalist Natasha Donn, and the paper was later sold to Sheena Rawcliffe and Tony Purbrook, who moved it out of a back bedroom and into proper offices in Lagoa in 1993. Inês Lopes has been editor since 2005. In 2012 the paper was acquired by the Open Media Group under publisher Bruce Hawker, and the title became Portugal Resident. The portugalresident.com website launched in 2014 and was fully redesigned at the end of 2019. The paper marked its 30th anniversary in 2019 with an event at the Tivoli Carvoeiro Hotel attended by more than 150 guests, including former owner Sheena Rawcliffe and afpop's then CEO Michael Reeve. Today Portugal Resident covers national and Algarve news, sport, business, property, food and drink, motoring and health, alongside a weekly newsletter and a podcast. The print edition is distributed to newsstands across the Algarve by VASP, Portugal's leading press distribution company, at a cover price of EUR 2, with paper and digital subscriptions available further afield. It is part of the Open Media Group stable of titles, which also includes Essential Algarve, Inside Carvoeiro, Inside Lagos and the Portuguese-language weekly Barlavento.
