Museu de Portimão

Museu de Portimão occupies the former São Francisco fish-canning factory on the Arade riverfront in the centre of Portimão. The building dates from the late 19th century, the municipality acquired it in 1996 to preserve the site's history of salt curing and, later, industrial sardine canning, and the museum opened on 17 May 2008. The permanent exhibition, "Portimão, Território e Identidade" (Portimão, Territory and Identity), traces the social, economic and cultural history of the communities who shaped the area, from the region's earliest inhabitants through the fishing and canning industries that once lined the river. The museum also runs a programme of temporary exhibitions and hosts the Centro de Documentação e Arquivo Histórico (Documentation Centre and Historical Archive), an educational workshop (Oficina Educativa), and satellite sites including the Alcalar megalithic monuments interpretation centre, the Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes and the Alvor lifeboat interpretation centre. The museum has collected a run of awards since opening, including the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2010, the DASA Museum of Work award in Dortmund in 2011, and, most recently, the 2025 Silletto Award from the European Museum Forum for community participation and engagement. It opens Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays and public holidays), with reduced hours in the low season and later hours through August, and entry is free for national residents on Sundays. A standard ticket costs EUR 3, a combined ticket covering the Alcalar site is EUR 4, and reduced tickets (over 65s and ages 16 to 25) are EUR 1.50.
