MAPS - Movimento de Apoio à Problemática da Sida

MAPS – Movimento de Apoio à Problemática da Sida grew out of an informal volunteer movement supporting the seropositive community in the mid-1980s. It was formally established on 13 May 1992 and recognised as a Private Institution of Social Solidarity on 3 December 1993. Its mission is to develop and provide community services around HIV/AIDS, sexuality, addiction, homelessness, migrants, ethnic minorities and other groups facing social emergency. Headquartered in Faro, MAPS also runs centres in Portimão, Quarteira, Loulé, Tavira, Lagos, Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António, including a psychosocial care and support centre and a temporary accommodation centre for people who are homeless. In September 2022 it opened CAES 2.0 in the Algarve, providing 30 beds for people in need. MAPS also takes part in awareness campaigns such as the European HIV and Hepatitis Testing Week. MAPS' Faro headquarters is at Avenida Cidade de Hayward, Blocos C1 and D2, Vale de Carneiros.
