Praia do Vau is a sheltered beach on the western side of Portimão, soft sand backed by low ochre cliffs that are easy to get down. The cliffs here are lower and gentler than at the neighbouring beaches, with ramp and step access rather than long stairways, and the water is usually calm. Sandstone outcrops frame the sand at either end, and the clifftop path connects east towards Praia da Rocha and west in the direction of Alvor. It has a settled, local feel compared with the big beach around the corner. It suits families, older visitors who want easy access, and anyone based in Portimão after a calmer alternative to the main event.
