Cabanas de Tavira
Cabanas de Tavira strings itself along the edge of the Ria Formosa a few kilometres east of Tavira, facing the lagoon rather than the open sea. The name comes from the fishermen's huts that once stood here, and the village grew serving the tuna fisheries that worked this coast for centuries. Day to day, life happens on the boardwalk that runs the length of the ria-front, past cafés and restaurants that look across the water to the barrier island opposite. The beach, Praia de Cabanas, sits on that island: small boats shuttle across the narrow channel through the season, and the reward is a long run of Atlantic sand and dunes with space even in August. At the western edge of the village stands the seventeenth-century fort of São João da Barra, built to guard the old river bar. The lagoon sets the rhythm: tides empty and fill the channel, boats settle onto the mud and float again, and the light changes by the hour. Tavira, with its churches and riverfront old town, is ten minutes away. Cabanas suits slow travellers: boardwalk mornings, boat-and-beach afternoons, and octopus or tuna for dinner facing the water.
