Vale do Lobo

Vale do Lobo is not a town that grew but a resort that was planned, and it wears that honestly: one of the Algarve's oldest luxury resorts, laid out in the 1960s on the coast near Almancil, and now one corner of the so-called Golden Triangle it shares with Quinta do Lago. The formula is golf, beach and sport, done at scale. Two courses, the Royal and the Ocean, run through the umbrella pines, and the Royal's sixteenth hole, played across a clifftop ravine with the Atlantic below, is one of the most photographed holes in European golf. The beach runs below ochre cliffs, long and well kept, with beach clubs and restaurants at the resort's centre, the Praça, which becomes the social hub on summer evenings. A long-established tennis academy adds the third sport, and villas and gardens fill the pine woods between. This is a private, managed landscape rather than a Portuguese town: for markets and everyday life, Almancil is ten minutes inland, and Faro airport twenty. Vale do Lobo suits golfers, sporty families and anyone who wants the Algarve with the details handled: tee times, beach beds and dinner within a golf buggy's range.
