Algarve CircleWhere to stay

Where to stay in the Algarve.

The region is small, so where you base yourself shapes the whole trip, the beaches you can walk to, the dinners you can stroll home from, how far you drive. Here is how to choose, town by town, from people who live in them.

The best towns to stay in

Coastal bases first, each showing how much is actually nearby, real places, events and offers live right now, so you can see which town suits your trip.

All towns

Hotel, village or villa

Three honest options, and who each one suits.

A resort town

Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos: everything walkable, the beach minutes away, restaurants and nightlife on tap. The easiest soft landing, busiest in summer.

A quieter village

Tavira, Carvoeiro, Salema and the like: prettier, calmer, more local. You will likely want a car, and you will be glad of the peace.

A villa with space

Inland or on the edge of town: a pool, room to breathe and real value off-season. Best for families and groups who want a base, not a hotel.

How to pick where to stay

If it is your first time and you want everything easy, base yourself in the central strip, Lagos, Albufeira, Vilamoura or Carvoeiro, where the beaches, restaurants and trips are all close and you can manage without a car. For a quieter, more local feel, the east around Tavira and the villages west of Lagos reward a bit more planning with a lot more charm.

Travelling as a family or a group, a villa with a pool inland or on a town's edge often beats a hotel on both space and price, especially outside July and August. And whenever you come, staying a little outside the busiest centres usually means better value and a more real Algarve, with the coast still a short drive away.

Algarve Circle shows you each town as it actually is, the places, the events, the offers that are live this week, so you can pick a base with your eyes open rather than off a brochure.
