Dolphin Watching
Common and bottlenose dolphins live off the Algarve all year round, and on a good day you will see them riding the bow wave metres from the boat. Trips run from Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Vilamoura, Faro and Sagres, most with marine biologists or experienced skippers who know where the pods feed.
The honest version, which good operators tell you themselves: sightings are likely, never guaranteed. Many offer a free second trip if no dolphins appear. Spring to autumn brings the calmest seas and the most reliable sightings, and morning departures usually get the flattest water.

Before you book
When is the best time of year for dolphin watching in the Algarve?
Dolphins are resident year-round, but April to October brings the calmest seas and the most reliable sightings. Winter trips still run in good weather and can be wonderfully quiet.
Are sightings guaranteed?
No honest operator guarantees wild animals. Sighting rates on this coast are high, and many operators offer a free repeat trip if you see none. Treat any "guaranteed dolphins" claim with suspicion.
Is dolphin watching suitable for young children?
Yes, with the right boat. Fast RIBs are exciting but bumpy and most set a minimum age around 4 to 6. Catamarans and larger boats are steadier and take all ages. Each listing here shows the operator’s own age guidance.
