Feira da Praia has run in Vila Real de Santo Antonio since the town's founding in 1774, when it moved here from its original site on the beaches near Monte Gordo. Six days of stalls line Avenida da Republica and Praca Marques de Pombal, split between clothing, homeware and crafts on the avenue and regional food products, cured meats, cheeses and dried fruit in the square. The fair draws thousands of visitors from across the border, many timing their trip to 12 October, a public holiday in Spain. Evenings bring free entertainment on a riverside stage. It is one of the oldest fairs in the Algarve and a fixture of the region's autumn calendar.
