Since 2014, T.J. and West Coast Adventures has guided more than 7,000 guests across the region, specializing in small-group and private hiking adventures that go beyond the Algarve’s usual beaches, viewpoints, and tourist trails. Experiences range from the wild cliffs and remote beaches of the Costa Vicentina to the hidden coves of the south coast, the Fishermen’s Trail, and the mountains of Monchique. Offerings include small-group hiking adventures, private half- and full-day experiences, custom tours for families and individuals, and specially designed programs for retreats, schools, companies, and other groups. Experiences combine adventurous hiking with storytelling, slow exploration, local knowledge and history, swimming, sunsets, and homemade food. T.J. also designs bespoke hiking and active holidays for travelers who want to explore the Algarve independently or build a deeper, more adventurous journey around the region. These can range from a custom self-guided itinerary to a fully planned multi-day trip incorporating accommodation, hiking routes, local experiences, activities, transportation and logistics. T.J. can also personally guide, host, or coordinate selected parts of the journey. An American-trained nature guide who has lived in the Algarve for more than 13 years, T.J. has spent thousands of hours exploring its trails, landscapes, hidden corners, and local stories. His approach combines deep local knowledge with thoughtful experience design, creating adventures that are active but unhurried, carefully crafted but open to discovery, and designed to reveal a wilder and more unexpected side of the Algarve.
