The Star

Run by the English couple Rick and Rozy for more than twelve years, The Star is a small, retro rock bar tucked up a side street off Lagos's second square, reached via steps between a bank and a toy shop at Travessa 1º de Maio, 9. Karaoke every Sunday evening and a Monday night quiz are the bar's signature fixtures, with classic rock and a well loved jukebox filling most other nights. It draws a mix of locals, expats and holidaymakers who tend to know each other by the second round. Drinks are among the cheapest in Lagos: the bar's own price board lists a large draught beer at EUR 2, bottled beers from EUR 1 and a glass of house wine for just EUR 1. When the mood takes her, co-owner Rozy also cooks up homemade curry, chilli and other bar snacks for hungry regulars. Reviewers consistently describe The Star as intimate and spotless, more a place for conversation than a big night out, with the same warm welcome whether it's a first visit or a return trip after years away.
