Café Calcinha

Cafe Calcinha opened on 5 June 1929 on Praca da Republica in the centre of Loule, and has also traded over the decades under the names Central, Carioca and Louletano. It became a regular meeting point for the poet Antonio Aleixo (1899 to 1949), known as the "poeta-cauteleiro", whose presence there is now marked by a statue on the cafe's terrace by sculptor Lagoa Henriques. Facing closure, the Camara Municipal de Loule bought the whole property in 2016 for 200,000 euros to preserve its historic fabric, restoring the space, furniture and decor before putting the concession out to public tender. It is now run day to day by a team of young operators under that concession, while the municipality remains the owner. In 2019 the cafe received Portugal's "Comercio com Historia" distinction, and it is a member of the European Historic Cafes Association (EHICA), forming part of Portugal's own Historic Cafes Route alongside cafes such as A Brasileira in Lisbon and Cafe Majestic in Porto. Cafe Calcinha is open every day from 8am to 11pm and takes table reservations, has an online shop, and lists a loyalty programme and special events through its own site.
