Toda a gente sobe ao castelo vermelho; poucos se demoram no rio. A Ponte Velha, medieval sobre fundações mais antigas e há muito tratada por ponte romana, continua a levar quem atravessa o Arade a pé, e as margens em volta são Silves no seu registo mais local: pescadores, esplanadas, manhãs de mercado e cegonhas a crepitar nas chaminés. Na maré vazia o rio recolhe-se em canais onde garças e limícolas se alimentam, com o castelo e a Sé empilhados sobre o casario caiado.
