Eating at a Portimao restaurant often means a table in a busy dining room with a standard menu. Loki does the opposite. Six seats, one chef, one tasting menu that changes with the catch and the season. The result is a meal that feels closer to being invited into someone's home kitchen than booking a table.
Loki sits on Rua Vasco Pires in the older part of Portimao, opened as chef Joao Oliveira's personal expression of Algarve cooking. He built it around the local supply chain : boats landing in Portimao harbour, producers in the Serra de Monchique, vegetables from farms inland : so each week the menu is different from the last. There is no a la carte. There is the tasting menu, the pairings if you want them, and the pace of the room.
Because the counter seats six and Joao cooks every service himself, booking ahead is essential. Evenings only, Tuesday to Saturday. Diners who know Algarve dining well consistently place Loki in their top three chef-led restaurants in the region.
What to expect:
- Chef-led tasting menu: A multi-course seasonal menu changing weekly based on the local catch and farm supply.
- Six-seat counter: Intimate open-kitchen setting with the chef plating every course in front of you.
- Wine pairings: Curated Portuguese-led wine pairings available alongside the menu.
- Evenings only: Tuesday to Saturday; reservations strongly recommended.
