Step through the green gates on the EN125 and the first thing you hear is the soft scrape of a brush on wet clay. For more than fifty-five years, that sound has been the quiet signature of Porches Pottery.

Step through the green gates on the EN125 and the first thing you hear is the soft scrape of a brush on wet clay. For more than fifty-five years, that sound has been the quiet signature of Porches Pottery.

The story began in the late 1960s when the painters Patrick Swift and Lima de Freitas set out to rescue the Porches ceramic tradition, which by then was close to disappearing. They converted a traditional Algarvian farmhouse between Lagoa and Portimao, trained a team of local artisans, and re-established a design language rooted in the specific pottery heritage of this stretch of coast. Every piece made since has been shaped, glazed and hand-painted on site.

Today the pottery still works exactly as Swift and de Freitas set it up. The painting studio sits inside the shop, not hidden behind it, so visitors walking the aisles pass artisans at their benches painting azulejos and finishing bowls in real time. Nothing is wholesaled in, nothing is mass-produced. The range covers decorative bowls, vases, coordinated tableware, hand-painted tiles and smaller gift pieces, alongside custom tile commissions for Algarve homes and restaurants.

A visit is rarely a quick one. The Bar Bacchus Cafe, set in the garden next to the studio, turns the stop into a morning or an afternoon. International shipping is offered for larger orders, which is why so many Algarve holiday homes carry a piece of Porches ceramic back with their owners to the UK, Germany or further.

What you'll find:

  • Hand-painted Algarve ceramics: Decorative bowls, vases, tableware and giftware made in the on-site studio.
  • Azulejo tiles: Hand-painted tiles for residential and commercial commissions.
  • Live painting studio: Artisans at work painting and glazing visible from the shop floor.
  • Bar Bacchus Cafe: Cafe in the garden for refreshments alongside a visit.
  • International shipping: Larger orders and tile commissions shipped worldwide.
